Power is a right, not a privilege.

The Whānau Fund Trust was established in 2021 by Nau Mai Rā Limited, with the belief that everyone has the right to electricity and families should not have to choose between basic needs and keeping the lights on.

Through the spirit of manaakitanga, the trust’s objectives is to to eliminate power poverty.

We do this through partnership with local communities to foster collaboration, support energy focused programmes and champion change when it comes to issues of energy hardship

Our Vision

Too many New Zealand families are forced to choose between heating their home and putting food on the table. That's not okay.

The Whānau Fund Charitable Trust was established by Nau Mai Rā Limited with one goal: no whānau should ever go cold. We fund initiatives across electricity bill relief, Healthy Homes, and Power Education, so families stay warm, healthy, and connected.

Feedback from Our Whānau

  • Whānau From South Auckland

“The support I received, whether it was through energy assistance, healthcare access, or nutritious food, made a significant difference for my whānau. The program helped us stay warm, healthy, and connected during a challenging time”

  • Whānau From Ōtautahi

“We love dealing with Tamaiti Healthy Homes staff. Their support reduced our power bill from $1159 to $578. The installation of the heat pump and additional resources during winter made a huge difference.”

  • Whānau from Waikato

“This has been our healthiest winter so far, we’ve only had one sick person this winter. Usually our kids are sick all winter.”

  • Te Puawaitanga ki Ōtautahi Trust

The funding from the Whānau Trust has really strengthened our ability to support our whānau ora approach and enhance the outcomes for our whānau.

  • Whānau - Manaaki Ora Programme, Auckland

There are heaps of families that are struggling with heating and eating at the same time. I’m grateful that we don’t have to be that way this winter.

  • Whānau - Manaaki Ora Programme, Auckland

Honestly, not having to worry about how much power we have used knowing I can afford our bill has taken a massive relief off my mental health. It has made me a better person, and has helped me take some time out for my whānau and other things that need my attention rather than stressing out about this, that and the other.” - Whānau of six
